Just returned from a week in Tuscany, near San Gimignano. Took 1100 pictures...below are a selection of them.
Here's a spread that I really wish had made it into the book, but sadly it didn't leave enough room for text. I thought it showed the relationship between Fig and Gulliver very well.
Early sketch of Gulliver shaking fish out of his hair. I wanted my Gulliver to be different from the standard strapping adventurous ones...I based him on a combination of John Lennon....and me.
This is the picture that started the whole thing....I drew this spread as spec work for Oxford University Press when I started on Fig's Giant (then with the working title, Gulliver)...luckily they liked it.
Here's a sneak preview of the inside of Fig's Giant. This was my first commissioned picture book, a month or so after I graduated in July 2003. It seems incredible that it is now the latest of my books to be published....publishing is a slow business.
This page is the title spread and one of my favourites from the book.
Check back soon for some sketches from the book and versions of illustrations that didn't make it onto the page....
This illustration was chopped around quite a bit in order to get the text to fit around it. This was definitley a case of Photoshop saving the day. It took me hours and hours to rearrange the illustration but at least it didn't require me start from scratch (as it would if it was non-digital)....
