The Emperor of Lilliput...never used in the finished book but I was quite pleased with the colours in this...
Working on Fig's outfit...designed by my lovely wife, Alex.
A chart I made with Molly and Lara at Oxford University Press when we trying to decide just how tall Gulliver was...
a different colour version of the same illustration.
An early experiment with colour for a page where some politicians are plotting...
Here's a spread that I really wish had made it into the book, but sadly it didn't leave enough room for text. I thought it showed the relationship between Fig and Gulliver very well.
Early sketch of Gulliver shaking fish out of his hair. I wanted my Gulliver to be different from the standard strapping adventurous ones...I based him on a combination of John Lennon....and me.
Here's how the spec work turned out in colour. Sadly by the time it reached the book it had been watered down somewhat to allow for text etc...
Here's Fig again, my wife Alex designed her outfit...
Here's another early sketch of Fig, the main protagonist in the story....
This is the picture that started the whole thing....I drew this spread as spec work for Oxford University Press when I started on Fig's Giant (then with the working title, Gulliver)...luckily they liked it.
Here's a sneak preview of the inside of Fig's Giant. This was my first commissioned picture book, a month or so after I graduated in July 2003. It seems incredible that it is now the latest of my books to be published....publishing is a slow business.
This page is the title spread and one of my favourites from the book.
Check back soon for some sketches from the book and versions of illustrations that didn't make it onto the page....
This illustration was chopped around quite a bit in order to get the text to fit around it. This was definitley a case of Photoshop saving the day. It took me hours and hours to rearrange the illustration but at least it didn't require me start from scratch (as it would if it was non-digital)....
This was one of my favourite spreads because of it's relative simplicity. I also like the dramatic shadow....a case where showing less means more I think.
another sneak peak a the book....
Advance copy of Fig received this morning, should be being published in October I believe....click the link to pre-order from Amazon....
Our neighbours have just brought us two mackerel, caught today. They have such amazing colours that I had to take some photos before we ate them...they were tasty too.
